The Frederick News-Post invites new business owners in Frederick County to share some details about their venture. Open for Business is a chance to find out more about what's new in your neighborhood.

Chris and Marcie Sprankle both had other jobs (Chris with a waste-management company and Marcie with the Department of Veterans Affairs) before they decided to open MaidPro Frederick, at 1713 Rosemont Ave., Suite B, in Frederick. Chris Sprankle talked with the News-Post recently about the decision to open their home cleaning service.

You and your wife both worked for other people. What made you and your wife want to start your own business?

I'd been in the service industry for a long time. I just wanted the independence. We felt the opportunity was there for home cleaning in the area. We really wanted to build something that was close-knit with the community. Basically, just find a niche that we felt that we could both excel in with both of our talents and skills, and business and marketing and sales. And [with] her administrative background, we felt like we'd be a good team.

What skills do you think transfer from the fields you two have been involved in?

I had been a territory manager, salesperson, sales manager in my past industry, and it's been in service. Just knowing that any service you have that is going to make a customer happy, those skills transfer over. Just to make sure that we could run our own business, and provide something that's much needed in the area and make sure that we were doing it well and become reputable. That's on my end, and hers is more administrative, so she does a lot of the, she's kind of the silent partner, doing the billing and a lot of the administrative details and she's always excelled in that. So we thought that just the industry itself, the need, and our skill sets put together would be a good match to start this business.

I'm sure it's exciting. Is it also intimidating or frightening to set out on your own?

We had the stability of working for some big companies, me in the private sector and Marcie working for the federal government, and it was really just the independence of doing our own thing and knowing that we could be successful at it. So it was risky, but we felt like the area had a big need for what we're doing, and we had the skill set to provide a really great product.

MaidPro is a franchise, right?

That's correct.

How many employees do you guys have?

We have 10 employees. We're growing at a faster-than-expected pace. We probably should only have six employees, maybe five or six, but we've grown to the point where we've had to hire. We're hiring probably every two or three weeks, a new cleaner, doing training. We're growing really fast.
