Everything You Need to Know About How to Clean Your Blinds

Did you know that your dusty blinds contribute to the overall poor air quality in your home? The cleaning experts at MaidPro know this, which is why they include blind cleaning as a part of their cleaning services. However, depending on how often you have your home cleaned, you may want to do a quick once-over to prevent dust buildup. This guide has everything you need to know about how to clean your blinds.

How to Clean Blinds

There are two methods for cleaning your blinds. The first is a blinds cleaning tool. This unique tool typically has a handle, and several fingerlike wands positioned tightly together. Position the blinds between the fingers and run the length of the blinds. If using a microfiber cloth, wrap it around your hand and wipe from side to side, not up and down.

The second method for cleaning blinds is to use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. This knocks the dust loose while sucking it up. Move the attachment back and forth in a left-to-right pattern. Start at the top of your blinds and work your way down. This ensures you vacuum up the dust you knock loose as it falls to the lower blinds.

Wood Blinds

If your blinds are made from wood, you need to take an extra step in caring for them. The wood will eventually dry out, making them dull and susceptible to cracking or splitting. To keep your wood blinds looking like new, give them a once over with a good quality wood polish. Spray a microfiber cloth or even a sock and run it over the blinds blade by blade. Don't forget to do both sides. Avoid using water, as this can cause your wood blinds to warp.

Fabric Blinds

Vacuuming should be enough for routine cleaning of your fabric blinds. If the fabric becomes stained or very dirty, you will need to wash them. The best solution is to have them dry-cleaned. If your fabric blinds have a honeycomb design, use a hair dryer on a cool/low setting to blow the dust out of the pockets.

Mini Blinds

If your blinds are made from aluminum, vinyl, or plastic, you have a bigger challenge on your hands. Dust and dirt left on the blinds can be hard to remove as it gets stuck. Start by vacuuming to remove the loose dust. Then give your mini blinds a wash to remove the stuck-on dust and dirt.

To avoid making a mess of your home, remove the blinds from the window to wash them. Take them outside or fill your tub with several inches of warm water. Use a sponge and dish soap to wipe down the blinds. Once clean, rinse with clean water. Lay the cleaned blinds on a towel to dry before you hang them back up.

Clean Your Blinds and Improve Your Air Quality

Window blinds tend to be one of those things that people forget about cleaning. They blend into the home and go unnoticed, despite collecting dust. A quick swipe in between your professional cleaning visits can help keep your windows looking brighter and your indoor air quality cleaner.
